Clique
klēk,klik/
noun
plural noun: cliques
a small group of people, with shared interests or other features in common, who spend time together. They aren’t usually friendly to other people and do not readily allow others to join them.
Usually, when I hear the word “clique” I immediately think about the girls from the movie Mean Girls, and all of the drama of being in high school. It’s a word that has a negative connotation and not usually used to describe college friendships, however, people on my college campus have been talking about it on social media lately. I thought it was odd because I don’t see many cliques, but maybe I should shed some light on how to handle “clique-ish” behavior.
. It’s natural to have a person or small group of people that you trust more than others. You should also aim to surround yourself with people with the same goals as yourself. These are the people that are going to be there for you when you need them and when you’re down and out. These are the people that are going to become your family while you’re away from your real family. How well your college experience goes ultimately depends on whom you decide to surround yourself with for 4 years.
But don’t forget, it’s immensely important to network and establish as many relationships as possible. This is a vital part of the college experience, from a professional standpoint. Above everything, don’t be afraid to establish close friendships in fear that you’re forming a clique, because there’s no problem with having a core group of friends as long as you can operate as an individual.
